How to use Instructions: If you take a tire and tube off of a bike wheel you'll notice that a bicycle wheel spoke comes through a hole in the bike wheel rim. Is is secured in place to the wheel rim by a small nut. The nut is called a nipple. The nipple acts somewhat like a nut on a screw. You turn one way to loosen and the opposite way to tighten. If you follow the spoke from the rim to the wheel. You'll notice that each spoke most commonly goes to a different side of the wheel hub. By tightening the nipple with a spoke wrench you increase the tension on the spoke thereby pulling the rim closer to the side of the hub that the spoke is attached. Loosening the nipple with a spoke wrench will have the opposite effect, thereby bringing the bike wheel rim closer to the side of the hub that the spoke is not connected to. This process of adjusting the spoke and its nipple is called "Truing". For small alignment issues it is common to adjust each alternating spoke a 1/4 turn each in a different direction to bring the wheel rim back to true alignment, "centered on the hub". For larger areas of the rim out of alignment it is best to begin on the outside area and work your ways inwards. For major repairs & wheel building it is reccomended to use a truing stand which allows the bike wheel to be mounted and rotated.
